Sam Glanzman Dell Combat #24; 31 page original art collection
Back in 1992, my (ex) partner was in Baltimore for a convention and a guy walked in with some art and showed it to him. They went to his house after hours and, long story…he came back to Minneapolis with hundreds of pounds, and thousands of pages of Dell art, dozens of complete interiors, plus some paperback cover paintings, 16 mm films, and a 1966 Beatles fan magazine pasted up for shooting. We think someone else might have gotten there first, because why would he NOT have any covers? Fast forward to now, the Beatles photos have all fallen of the pages, 98% of the art is gone, but I still have some Glanzman. A couple of complete, or near, and this one that was incomplete when we first took inventory.
In the early nineties, my (now-ex) partner Chris was on an east coast convention run and he ran into a guy named John Chilly who showed him some originals from Dell, for whom he onced worked. After hours, Chris went to his house and saw an amazing sight – a mountain of original art, paintings from Dell Paperback covers, some by Mr Chilly, 16-mm films, a Beatles fan magazine pasted up ready for the camera.. The amazing thing is that most of the comic art consisted of complete books, or nearly complete. We bought it all. Now I wonder why he had no covers, but there are many details I may have once knew, but are now forgotten. So I have just a few packages left, and this is one of them.
Here’s Combat #24 by Dell Comics, 1964. We have pgs 1-28 and 29-32. Many Dells had a very short text-only piece on page 28, and many of them were missing from the collections. Here, pg 29 is shown twice. Enjoy.
